With his wings, Hermes became the messenger of the gods. Endowed with extraordinary qualities, Hermes, according to legend, stood up at only one day old, climbed out of his cradle, played a lyre he made from a tortoise shell, and delighted in its sounds. One day, while wandering in the fields, he stole cattle under the protection of the god Apollo. When Apollo learned of the incident, he was furious; he took Hermes by the arm and brought him to Zeus for punishment. However, the sounds emanating from Hermes' lyre enchanted both Zeus and Apollo. Instead of punishing him, Zeus gave Hermes a winged helmet and a pair of sandals, appointing him as the messenger of the gods.
