Marcus Aurelius, both a powerful Roman emperor and a philosopher, is an important historical figure known as much for his writings as for his administrative abilities. He was the last of the Five Good Emperors who reigned between 96 and 180, and is also considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers.
He first made a name for himself through his wars against the Persian Empire, which was regaining strength in Asia, and against the Germanic tribes along the Limes Germanicus (Germanic frontier), after which he crossed the Danube River. In the East, he suppressed a rebellion led by Avidius Cassius.
His philosophical work, Meditations, was written between 170–180 while he was at war. The work is still revered today as a literary masterpiece. Marcus believed that people should live virtuously. According to him, people should live in accordance with nature.
